A Delightful Post from CONTRARY BRIN - Pilant's Business Ethics ...

Why the Candidates Should (But Won?t) Stipulate

Take the day in 1992 when both Republican Senator Warren Rudman and Democrat Paul Tsongas made headlines declaring that everybody was at fault for the country?s fiscal condition at the time, from then-President Bush to the democrat-controlled Congress, to the American people. Responsible economists later credited Rudman and Tsongas for spurring reforms that helped lead to the Clinton era surpluses.

Around the same time, retired senator and conservative eminence gris Barry Goldwater denounced the followers of ?migr? philosopher Leo Strauss ? so-called ?neocons? ? for hijacking Goldwater?s beloved movement over cliffs of romantic delusion. A more recent example of post retirement candor came When G.W. Bush?s ex-Treasury Secretary, Paul O?Neill, revealed a swamp of backroom dealings and ineptitude, explaining that he was "old and rich" and unafraid to speak his mind. On the other side, some claim that Senator Joe Lieberman really came into his own when he ran as an independent, shrugging off party discipline (if such a thing exists, among democrats.)

    CONTRARY BRIN

The article goes on to point out that candor is almost suicidal under the rules of our current system. Excellent thought. What I found more interesting was Brin?s awareness of Leo Strauss, the man behind the curtain of much of the modern Neoconservative movement. I wouldn?t have expected a scientist to have read so deeply into politics.

Yes, Strauss is mentioned in the histories you can find on the web about Neoconservatism but few point out his critical role in the movement, nor do they emphasize the manipulative nature of his teaching. The articles talk about Strauss teaching about a return to Classical values ? this is utter nonsense, Strauss was designing a new political elite from his students, manipulative and power hungry. We will be dealing with his minions for decades to come. He planted the dragon seeds that bedevil our foreign policy even today. And they will be pulling many other strings as well.

So, Mr. Brin has impressed me and I wish him well. I think we share many of the same thoughts.

(AP) ? U.S. military deaths in the Afghan war have reached 2,000, a cold reminder of the human cost of an 11-year-old conflict that now garners little public interest at home as the United States prepares to withdraw most of its combat forces by the end of 2014.

The toll has climbed steadily in recent months with a spate of attacks by Afghan army and police ? supposed allies ? against American and NATO troops. That has raised troubling questions about whether countries in the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan will achieve their aim of helping the government in Kabul and its forces stand on their own after most foreign troops depart in little more than two years.

On Sunday, a U.S. official confirmed the latest death, saying that an international service member killed in an apparent insider attack by Afghan forces in the east of the country late Saturday was American. A civilian contractor with NATO and at least two Afghan soldiers also died in the attack, according to a coalition statement and Afghan provincial officials. The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of those killed had not been formally released. Names of the dead are usually released after their families or next-of-kin are notified, a process that can take several days. The nationality of the civilian was also not disclosed.

In addition to the 2,000 Americans killed since the Afghan war began on Oct. 7, 2001, at least 1,190 more coalition troops from other countries have also died, according to iCasualties.org, an independent organization that tracks the deaths.

According to the Afghanistan index kept by the Washington-based research center Brookings Institution, about 40 percent of the American deaths were caused by improvised explosive devices. The majority of those were after 2009, when President Barack Obama ordered a surge that sent in 33,000 additional troops to combat heightened Taliban activity. The surge brought the total number of American troops to 101,000, the peak for the entire war.

According to Brookings, hostile fire was the second most common cause of death, accounting for nearly 31 percent of Americans killed.

Tracking deaths of Afghan civilians is much more difficult. According to the U.N., 13,431 civilians were killed in the Afghan conflict between 2007, when the U.N. began keeping statistics, and the end of August. Going back to the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, most estimates put the number of Afghan civilian deaths in the war at more than 20,000.

The number of American dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion began. Some other news organizations use a count that also includes those killed outside Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the global anti-terror campaign led by then-President George W. Bush.

The 2001 invasion targeted al-Qaida and its Taliban allies shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

Victory in Afghanistan seemed to come quickly. Kabul fell within weeks, and the hardline Taliban regime was toppled with few U.S. casualties.

But the Bush administration's shift toward war with Iraq left the Western powers without enough resources on the ground, so by 2006 the Taliban had regrouped into a serious military threat.

Obama deployed more troops to Afghanistan, and casualties increased sharply in the last several years. But the American public grew weary of having its military in a perpetual state of conflict, especially after the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq at the end of last year. That war, which began with a U.S.-led invasion in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein, cost the lives of nearly 4,500 U.S. troops, more than twice as many as have died in Afghanistan so far.

"The tally is modest by the standards of war historically, but every fatality is a tragedy and 11 years is too long," said Michael O'Hanlon, a fellow at the Brookings. "All that is internalized, however, in an American public that has been watching this campaign for a long time. More newsworthy right now are the insider attacks and the sense of hopelessness they convey to many. "

Attacks by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? have killed 52 American and other NATO troops so far this year.

The so-called insider attacks are considered one of the most serious threats to the U.S. exit strategy from the country. In its latest incarnation, that strategy has focused on training Afghan forces to take over security nationwide ? allowing most foreign troops to go home by the end of 2014.

Although Obama has pledged that most U.S. combat troops will leave by the end of 2014, American, NATO and allied troops are still dying in Afghanistan at a rate of one a day.

Even with 33,000 American troops back home, the U.S.-led coalition will still have 108,000 troops ? including 68,000 from the U.S. ? fighting in Afghanistan at the end of this year. Many of those will be training the Afghan National Security Forces that are to replace them.

"There is a challenge for the administration," O'Hanlon said, "to remind people in the face of such bad news why this campaign requires more perseverance."

While the contract hasn?t been finalized, analysts are predicting that First Solar will win the rights to supply NextEra Energy Inc. with solar arrays for what will be the world?s largest solar farm. The two companies are currently working together on the 550-megawatt Desert Sunlight solar farm in Riverwide County, California.

NextEra?s Blythe project, based in southern California, will soon surpass the capacity of Arizona?s Agua Caliente solar farm, a huge facility built exclusively by First Solar that is currently 85 percent complete with 250 megawatts of capacity. Despite the fact that there has been no official word as to who NextEra will choose to build and supply the new project, First Solar is reportedly the only manufacturer of thin-film panels large enough to handle the job, according to analysts interviewed by Bloomberg News; the Blythe project will have a final capacity of 1,000 megawatts, requiring an extensive amount and array of materials.

With the economy currently facing unprecedented turmoil, especially in the renewable energy sector, First Solar has seen its stock drop 68 percent in the past year. Today?s speculation, however, gave the company a much-needed boost, bumping its stock up 11 percent while reminding the industry just how deep its manufacturing capabilities are.

?It would definitely be a positive for First Solar if they were able to win a 1,000-megawatt project,? said Ben Schuman, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities.

Despite the rampant speculation, a spokesman for Florida-based NextEra reiterated that the company has yet to choose a panel provider for the project, suggesting that they may work with more than one supplier.

Upcoming changes | Me, a writer of movie scripts

The new interface of this blog is under way.

The background ? the theme ? will change. The current is based on the name of my company - Mountain Wind ? but since it is not a name often mentioned and is something more for my self-esteem than have much of practical function in my interface towards the world, I think there is room for something more catching.

The new background will consists of images from my stories. I?ve done several sketches of characters figuring in my portfolio. When painted, scanned and merged into a unit, I?ll think it will be more attractive and say more about my work than the current.

Then I?ll have the situation that I have more to write about than screenwriting. The title ?Me, a writer of movie scripts? will be changed. The url will remain to keep things practical. I have a few ideas for new title:
    ?Me, writing stories?
    ?Me, a storyteller?
    ?Me, telling stories?

I think I like the middle best: ?Me, a storyteller?.

It is important that there is a ?Me? first, because this blog is about me. It is not a general-good-advice-site, nor a blog by someone who by her name alone can build an audience. This is me talking, telling, writing, what I like and think. I don?t think I should pretend something else.

    And I am a storyteller.

Do I write stories ? the first idea for a title? Most times, but not always. Do I tell stories ? the third idea for a title? Yes, but the stories are not told here on the blog; here I tell you how I tell them.

If you have any suggestions I?m interested.

Then I?ve been thinking about tagging my blog entries with an image, like I do with ?A word?. A ?post-it? in the corner with an image quickly telling what kind of project the blog entry is about. After all there will be movie scripts, a novel and a graphic novel to begin with. I will probably need some kind of flag to differ the posts visually. As far as I know, Blogger does not support the entries to have different templates for different blog entries, but I?ll check into that.

    Stay tuned.

Can a plug-in change your political diet?

Balancer / UW / Univ. of Mich.

The Balancer plug-in provides a cartoon character that indicates the balance of your browsing, from conservative red to liberal blue.

    By Alan Boyle

If you were told that your online reading habits lean toward the conservative or liberal side of the political spectrum, would you seek out more diversity? Or would you stick with the sources who agree with your point of view? Inquiring researchers want to know ??and to find out, they've created Balancer, a free plug-in for Google's Chrome browser.

"The top question that I'm most interested in is, can having real-time feedback about your online news reading habits affect the balance of the news that you read?" said Sean Munson, an assistant professor of human-centered design and engineering at the University of Washington.

Balancer determines whether your reading diet is fair and balanced by recording your visits to websites on a "whitelist" of 10,000 news sources and blogs. Each website has a rating on the liberal-to-conservative spectrum, typically based?on previous research ? for example, the studies that University of Chicago researchers Matthew Gentzkow and Jesse Shapiro have conducted on media bias and slant. (One of their studies, from 2010, rated the San Francisco Chronicle as the most liberal U.S. newspaper and the Washington Times as the most conservative.) Munson developed ratings for additional news sources, based on the other websites they linked to. (Yes, Cosmic Log is on the list, along with every other news website you've probably ever visited.)

When the Balancer plug-in is installed, a button is added to the browser bar that shows you a cartoon character balancing a conservative-red and a liberal-blue block on a stick. The comparative size of the blocks serves as an indication of how balanced your news diet is. If the stick is tilted way to one side, the cartoon will suggest websites from the other side that would bring your score into balance.

Some of the participants will get the verdict from Balancer right away; others will have to wait for a month while the plug-in gathers control data. That way, Munson and his colleagues can gauge the effect of real-time monitoring.

    Personality profile
There's one more data-mining twist: When you sign up for the plug-in, you'll be asked a set of questions about personality attributes: Do you consider yourself liberal or conservative? Are you the life of the party? Do you often forget to put things back in their proper place? The answers to such questions add a dimension to Munson's research.

"It's possible that different personality attributes predict reading behavior, as well as how amenable someone is to being persuaded to change reading habits," he told me. "We have found that some people do in fact seek out diversity, but there are also some people who are 'diversity-challenged' when it comes to online news reading."

The plug-in was developed at the University of Michigan, where Munson earned his doctorate, and works only with the Chrome Web browser. It misses out on anything you read via other browsers, including mobile apps. Funding for the project came from the National Science Foundation.

When Munson put his own reading habits to the test, he was surprised to find out how slanted his news diet turned out to be. So he's curious to find out how inclined other people might be to change their ways. "Even self-discovery is a valuable outcome, just being aware of your own behavior," he said in a news release. "If you do agree that you should be reading the other side, or at least aware of the dialogue in each camp, you can use it as a goal: Can I be more balanced this week than I was last week?"

Of course, most people probably think they're already fair and balanced, no matter how their political views look from the outside. So far, a few dozen people have signed up for the Balancer experiment, but Munson and his colleagues hope to sign up many more between now and the November elections.

Eventually, Munson's findings may influence the design of online search engines and recommendation websites. Today, your browser may ask if you're "feeling lucky." Someday, it just might ask if you feel like hearing a different opinion.

    But wait, there's more:
By now, you're probably asking, "What about privacy?" A browser plug-in that keeps track of your reading habits and matches them up with your personality may sound like a big wet kiss for Big Brother. Munson's aware of the concern: He said the plug-in has been designed to anonymize all the data coming in, and will only keep track of the sites on the 10,000-website whitelist. Any other data ? including records of your visits to the naughty parts of the Internet???will go no farther than your own computer, he said.

"We did that partly to minimize the traffic on our servers, and also to protect privacy," Munson told me. "We've tried to collect as little data as necessary for the study."

Do you trust him on that? What do you think about the idea of tracking your Web browsing for research purposes? (Let's face it: That's being done all the time for commercial purposes.) And what do you think about the idea of fair and balanced news browsing? Feel free to go on the record with your comments below.

Officials gather for contract ratification vote

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? NFL officials on the verge of approving a new contract say they are excited to get back to work.

Officials arrived Friday at a Dallas-area hotel to discuss and vote on an eight-year agreement reached with the league late Wednesday. They were meeting Friday night with a vote on the contact expected Saturday morning. Some planned to fly directly after the vote to their assigned cities for Sunday's game.

The deal must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members.

The officials were expected to meet the media at 7 p.m. but the news conference was canceled.

Some said they thought Monday night's Packers-Seahawks game, which ended in chaos after a call in the end zone gave the Seahawks the winning touchdown instead of a Packers interception, provided the final push toward a settlement. Many fans commentators ? and players in the league ? thought the call was botched.

Monday night's call brought the three-week furor over replacement officials to a fevered pitch.

"It's all history now," head linesman Tom Stabile said. "For us, it was a benefit. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back."

Line judge Jeff Bergman said he could see the play coming as he watched at home. He noticed that players were starting to take advantage of replacement officials struggling to keep control of the game.

"The last play of the game was something that was going to happen sooner or later," Bergman said. "It gave us and the league an opportunity to get together and hammer out a deal that was going to get hammered out anyway."

Referee Ed Hochuli, who led weekly tests and conference calls for officials to stay sharp during the lockout, declined to say whether the replacements made the right call.

"You really don't want to see that," Hochuli said. "You don't want to see the controversy. You don't want to see teams lose games that they shouldn't have lost, if indeed that's what happened. We're not making a judgment on that."

After three weeks of games marred by mistakes, the regular refs said they were heartened by the support they've received from fans, players and coaches ? even if they don't expect it to last very long now that they're back.

"You're not really beloved by the public. You're tolerated. And to see that type of reception that our guys got last night was really heartwarming," said Bergman, who will head to Green Bay for Sunday's game, one week after Packers players ripped the replacements for calling Monday's disputed play a touchdown.

"After the euphoria of the moment wears off, probably sometime early in the second quarter, it'll be back to regular NFL football mode," Bergman said. "Players will be questioning our judgment, our ancestry. Coaches will be screaming at us. And it'll be life as back to normal on Sundays."

One crew returned to work Thursday night. Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," referee Gene Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

China seals Bo's fate ahead of November 8 leadership congress

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's ruling Communist Party accused disgraced politician Bo Xilai of abusing power, taking huge bribes and other crimes on Friday, sealing the fate of a controversial leader whose fall shook a leadership handover due at a congress from November 8.

The once high-flying Bo now faces a criminal investigation that stemmed from a murder scandal, and will almost certainly be jailed. With the Communist Party congress about six weeks away, further steps in the case could come before then, helping pave the way for a transition of power, experts said.

"Bo Xilai's actions created grave repercussions and did massive harm to the reputation of the party and state, producing an extremely malign effect at home and abroad," the official statement from a party leaders' meeting said, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency.

Bo's wife Gu Kailai and his former police chief Wang Lijun have already been jailed over the scandal stemming from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, where Bo was Communist Party chief.

The official statement carried by Xinhua said that in the murder scandal, Bo "abused his powers of office, committed serious errors and bears a major responsibility".

That charge appears to reflect accusations from Wang's trial that suggested Bo tried to stymie the murder investigation.

Reports that Bo, the "princeling" son of a revolutionary leader, could escape with a light punishment have now been dealt a fatal blow, and accusations of womanizing could further tarnish his reputation in the eyes of Chinese people.

But the few weeks left before the congress will probably not allow time for a trial, said He Weifang, a law professor at Peking University who has closely followed Bo's downfall.

"I think it's quite certain that he won't be able to escape punishment under the criminal law, but the timing makes it unlikely that will happen before the congress," said He.

"I'd guess that he'll get a jail sentence of 20 years or longer. The death penalty is unlikely, although the bribery charges could in theory allow it, if the amount is as huge as they say."

At the congress, Chinese President Hu Jintao will step down as party chief, almost certainly making way for Vice President Xi Jinping to emerge as top leader. Xi is then almost sure to be appointed state president at the annual parliament session, likely in March next year.

    WARNING TO HEED EXAMPLE

Bo, 63, has been expelled from the party as well as the elite decision-making Politburo and Central Committee "in view of his errors and culpability in the Wang Lijun incident and the intentional homicide case involving Bogu Kailai", said the party announcement.

Bogu is his wife's official but rarely used surname.

Bo's "grave violations of party discipline" extended back to his time as an official in Dalian city and Liaoning province in northeast China, and as minister of commerce, said the statement from the Politburo.

"Party organizations at all levels must use the case of Bo Xilai's grave disciplinary violations as a negative example," it said.

Bo's son, Bo Guagua, who was a friend of the murdered Heywood, has remained largely silent throughout the fall of his parents. He appears to be still in the United States, after finishing graduate studies at Harvard University.

Since Bo Xilai was ousted in March, he has not been seen in public and has not been allowed to answer the accusations against him. At a news conference days before his removal, Bo rejected as "filth" and "nonsense" the then unspecified allegations against him and his family.

At the same time as announcing the slate of accusations against Bo, the party set the November 8 date for the congress that will unveil the country's new central leadership line-up. Eight is considered a lucky number in China.

The twin announcements will "significantly reduce perceived political and economic risks" and "help end policy paralysis," Ting Lu, China economist Bank of America/Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong said in an emailed research note.

"If anything, this should make markets and the general public somewhat assured that this is not really being delayed too far," Damien Ma, an analyst for the Eurasia Group who follows Chinese politics, said of the November 8 congress date.

    LEFTIST SYMPATHISERS CRY FOUL

Bo, 63, was widely seen as pursuing a powerful spot in the new political line-up before his career unraveled after his former police chief, Wang Lijun, fled to a U.S. consulate for more than 24 hours in February and alleged that Bo's wife Gu had poisoned Heywood to death.

After his appointment as party chief of Chongqing in 2007, Bo, a former commerce minister, turned it into a showcase of revolution-inspired "red" culture and his policies for egalitarian, state-led growth. He also won national attention with a crackdown on organized crime.

His brash self-promotion irked some leaders. But his populist ways and crime clean-up were welcomed by many of Chongqing's 30 million residents, as well as others who hoped that Bo could take his leftist-shaded policies nationwide.

His likely trial could still stir that ideological contention. China's party-run courts rarely find in favor of defendants, especially in politically-sensitive cases.

After state television announced the charges against Bo, some leftist sympathizers insisted that he was the innocent victim of a political plot.

"I just still don't believe that Bo has so many problems with corruption," Han Deqiang, a leftist Beijing academic who has supported Bo, told Reuters. "We have to wait and see what else comes out. But I don't think we've been given the truth."

In March, Bo was sacked as Chongqing party boss, and in April he was suspended from the party's Politburo, a powerful decision-making council with two dozen active members.

The latest party statement also said Bo "had or maintained improper sexual relations with multiple women". It added that the investigation discovered clues of other, unspecified crimes.

"We'll have to wait and see what charges are accepted by the prosecutors in any indictment," said Li Zhuang, a Beijing lawyer who was jailed by Bo after raising allegations that Chongqing's anti-crime gang policies involved torture and other unchecked abuses. "The charges could change."

    Mars images 'show old streambed'

Nasa's Curiosity rover has only been on the surface of Mars seven weeks but it has already turned up evidence of past flowing water on the planet.

The robot has returned pictures of classic conglomerates - rocks that are made up of gravels and sand.

Scientists on the mission team say the size and rounded shape of the pebbles in the rock indicate they had been transported and eroded in water.

Researchers think the rover has found a network of ancient streams.

The rocks, which were described in a media briefing at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, were likely laid down "several billion years ago". But the actual streams themselves may have persisted on the surface for long periods, said Curiosity science co-investigator Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

"We would anticipate that it could easily be thousands to millions of years," he told reporters.

Satellites at Mars have long captured images of channels on the planet's surface that were cut by some kind of flow, assumed to be liquid water. Curiosity's discovery at its landing site in the equatorial Gale Crater provides the first real ground truth for those observations.

By luck, the rover just happened to roll past a spectacular example of the conglomerate. A large slab, 10-15cm thick, was lifted out of the ground at an angle.

"We've named it Hottah," said rover project scientist John Grotzinger. The name refers to a lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. The team is using names from this region to catalogue objects at Gale.

"To us it just looked like somebody came along the surface of Mars with a jackhammer and lifted up the sidewalk that you might see in downtown LA at a construction site," he joked.

Scientists are now studying the images of the pebbles in the rock. The sizes and shapes will give them clues to the speed and distance of the ancient water flow.

The discovery site lies between the northern rim of the crater and the huge mountain that rises up from its central plain.

Previous orbital imagery of the region had hinted there might have been a water feature there. Curiosity's conglomerates support that hypothesis.

The current interpretation is that the rover is sitting at the head of an alluvial fan of material that washed down through the crater wall and across the plain, cutting many individual streams. Researchers even think they can identify the particular valley at the rim where the water entered the crater, and they have named it Peace Vallis.

There is an eagerness also to study the chemistry of the conglomerates because that will give an indication of the nature of the water - its pH value, for example - and that will provide some clues as to what the environment at the time might have looked like.

At the moment, the rover is heading towards a location dubbed Glenelg. Scientists think this will give them the best access to the rocks of interest.

The US space agency's $2.6bn mission touched down on the Red Planet on 6 August (GMT).

Much of the time since then has been spent commissioning the immensely complex, six-wheeled machine and its suite of 10 instruments.

Curiosity is funded for one Martian year (two Earth years) of study. It will try to determine in that time whether past environments at Gale Crater could ever have supported microbial life.

    • (A) Curiosity will trundle around its landing site looking for interesting rock features to study. Its top speed is about 4cm/s
    • (B) This mission has 17 cameras. They will identify particular targets, and a laser will zap those rocks to probe their chemistry
    • (C) If the signal is significant, Curiosity will swing over instruments on its arm for close-up investigation. These include a microscope
    • (D) Samples drilled from rock, or scooped from the soil, can be delivered to two hi-tech analysis labs inside the rover body
    • (E) The results are sent to Earth through antennas on the rover deck. Return commands tell the rover where it should drive next

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? What We ...

As you enter the stock exchange, you may notice that there are a good deal of fine quality investments available for you and with this, you can right away turn your little investment into a massive fortune in a short time period. In the present years, market daytrading has been fast rising in appreciation and plenty of individuals became keen to bet with it. Nevertheless for you to make this occur, you want to meticulously understand the law of demand and supply to be able to think up secrets that may work for your own benefit. A good goal for you is to have 3 times more profit in place than what your maximum amount you are prepared to lose actually is. If you are new to stock exchange day-trading these are some things to help get going.

When it is slowing down and you spot that there are not as many customers, that's when you would like to sell. One zone of weakness for many with stock option daytrading is knowing when to get out. Don?t hold out thinking you can squeeze bigger profits out of it or you might finish up losing money at the end. While margins for most traders are generally around half of the worth in traders account, day traders can face levels as low as twenty five percent. This indicates that a trader can by we could say, $1000 worth of stock from an account of only $250. Tips for surviving and flourishing as a stock trader The 5 most typical secrets adopted by day traders who attempt to make are profit are * Trend following ? utilised by all trading firms this tactic presupposes that stocks that having been constantly increasing may continue to rise. * Playing reports ? this plan of action is to buy stock in a company that has just reported excellent news * Range Trading ? here's where stock which has been rising and falling is purchased close to the low price and sold as it hits the serious price range. Refusing to endure and correctly handle trades that do not work leads to trading blunders. It's the lack of ability to deal with the inescapable losing trade that causes traders to chop winning trades short, move stops in the middle of a trade, cling on to losing trades, average down, and fail to pull on the trigger on sound trade setups. Learning how to accept and cope with trading loss could be equally as important as making good trades.

You want to gain from the loss ( that's its price ), so get it down. Include how you viewed the market at the time and the way the market action and your signals seemed to meet the standards for a sound trade set up. So what does the ?true? jobless rate look like, when you dump the seasonal corrections, and you consider ALL classes of jobless and underemployed employees? How does 18.0% sound to you? That is right, the non-seasonally altered, ?true? jobless rate, including ALL classes of the un- or under-employed, is an enormous 18.0%. Guage the trade : Once the trading day is over, return to what you wrote and see what can be learned. And it increased by 0.9% from December 2009! That is miles away from the 9.7% released by the govt.

The information released earlier in the month would prefer you to believe the economy must be improving. Hopefully it is not something that malign. But if you glance at the real information, how could you doubtless decide that? How could you actually believe, after critically considering this info, the Economy is headed in the correct direction? So that the question then becomes, WHY does the governing body work out and release the information in this format? Are they intentionally deceiving the U.S.

Thread: Static shock hazzard or not? - Family Woodworking

Oh look, a hornet's nest! Lemme poke at that a bit...

Honestly, I wouldn't worry at ALL about it.

Leave it for a bit - see if you get any nuisance shocks that you can't stand to tolerate. I've seen reports that after awhile the static buildup reduces significantly as a fine film of dust settles on the inside walls of the PVC. Static buildup is caused by dissimilar materials passing past each other - i.e. dust + pvc. When there's a fine film of dust on the surface of the PVC, it's then dust + dust and very little buildup happens, eliminating many users' static issues.

It's impossible to ground an insulator, since insulators don't conduct electricity and PVC is an insulator. Secondly, STATIC electricity is named such because it doesn't flow (because it can't, it's built up on an insulator!). A wire may discharge some of it, but only a very little in the immediate vicinity of the wire itself. It may be enough that you notice - it may not. It's a little bit of work and I would suggest holding off until you know you have a problem first.

Plus Size Women ? 8 Essential Tips (From A Man) For Looking Your ...

    Related eBooks

Some people get suspicious when they see a man writing about topics intimately related to women. Especially topics related to plus size women and plus size womens clothing. Afterall, what could a man possibly know about the challenges facing full-figured women such as shopping for plus size clothing?

What many women tend to forget is that men are very observant when it comes to the female species. The typical myth that men don?t notice if their wife or girlfriend has changed her hairstyle or is wearing a new dress is definitely not true. Most men are not clueless cavemen.

So it only makes sense to get a man?s perspective on what makes a plus size woman attractive in his eye. Below is a list of areas that a plus size woman can accentuate to enhance her natural beauty:

    1. Eyes ? If eyes are windows into the soul, then they certainly deserve special attention. For many plus size women, eyes are their most beautiful asset. Think Kirstie Alley. It really doesn?t take much ? some eyeliner and mascara (skip the eye shadow) and you?re done. If you wear glasses, then it?s certainly worth investing in a stylish set of frames.

    2. Hair ? No matter who you are or what your size, your hair can be your best asset. Cut it, perm it, add extensions, or what ever you like. Just do your best to make your hair look great. Also, don?t forget about the possibility to call attention to your face with hats ? especially during spring and summer.

    3. Smile ? A great smile is worth a million bucks! People naturally feel closer to someone who flashes them a warm and sincere smile. However, a set of healthy teeth and gums makes flashing that smile a whole lot easier. Actually, a set a fleshy, pink gums can be truly sexy on a plus size women. Think Anna Nicole Smith here.

    4. Skin ? Smooth, blemish-free skin that has a healthy glow is extremely sexy. Though a tan can be attractive, it?s not worth the risk of skin cancer and sun damage to your skin. It?s better instead to use a bronzing cream. Just choose one with a natural tone.

Makeup should be tastefully and sparingly applied. It?s amazing how many women don?t understand this. It?s also an area that men will definitely notice if done improperly. If you are unsure about what works best for you, then a consultation with a cosmetics professional can help.

    5. Rear ? A backside can be large and still be quite sexy! The secret is that it?s large in mostly one direction rather than being too wide. Firmness by way of muscularity helps a great deal back here. The classic hourglass shape is what men are looking for ? a large chest, wide hips and somewhat smaller stomach. May West was the epitome of this figure. If you are blessed with an hourglass figure then just about any type of clothing in your size will look great ? even tight fitting jeans. Don?t hide that beautiful shape in tent-like clothing!

    6. Cleavage ? Despite popular belief, not all plus size women are well endowed up top. But if you got it, then don?t be shy about flaunting it. This feature is one of the hallmarks of the hourglass figure. Men will overlook a lot of faults in the presence of a large bosom, but you probably already knew that.

    7. Hands ? A pair of well-manicured hands can make a dramatic difference in your appearance. Whether you have your nails professionally done or you do them yourself, choose a color that complements your complexion and use a polish that won?t chip.

    8. Mind and Heart ? Though not technically physical body parts, your mind and your heart are absolutely your most important features! What good is a beautiful package that?s empty inside? Every human being should be constantly and consistently working to improve his or her mind. This is what makes us interesting to others. And a kind heart is a huge turn on. Many a man has been won over by just a kind heart alone!

Taking pride in your health and your appearance along with your intellectual and spiritual growth will go a long way towards making you irresistible to those around you!

European Commission Realises There Might Be Startups Out There To Be Funded

photo (12)European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes has decided the billions of euros stored over at the EU might well be better spent. In a speech today in Brussels she proposed a number of new ideas about how to spend EU research money under the EU's research programme, Horizon 2020. This is effectively a fund running from 2014 to 2020 with an ?80 billion budget to back the EU?s new programme for research and innovation and ultimately to drive new growth and jobs in Europe. Out of the ?80 billion available to Horizon 2020, Kroes has proposed investing ?16 billion in digital technology research. Most interestingly for startups is a proposal to ring-fence significant funds for high growth technology companies and innovative SMEs. ?The world is changing: the way we innovate needs to change too," she said.

Morris County assisted living facility blamed for woman's death ...

When New Jersey families choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit after the sudden loss of a loved one, they understand that any legal action they do take will never change anything that happened in the past. However, their pursuit for justice may be able to protect other people and families by preventing similar acts of negligence from occurring in the future.

Recently, the family of a woman who died from injuries she sustained while living at an assisted living facility in Morris County filed a lawsuit against the facility and several medical professionals. The lawsuit claims that the facility was responsible for the woman's wrongful death because it failed to provide adequate security for residents and because the facility failed to make sure the woman received the immediate medical treatment she needed after she was injured on the property.

Before the woman died, she had told some workers at the assisted living facility that she was worried about her safety. On Oct. 3, 2010, she reported that another resident, who had a history of violence, was stalking her and harassing her. According to the lawsuit, the woman was told to avoid going near the resident. That same day, the resident attacked the woman.

During the attack, the woman was thrown to the ground. Despite hitting her head on the floor and suffering other injuries, workers at the facility did not send the woman to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Several hours after the attack, the woman continued to complain about the pain she was experiencing, so staff finally took her to a hospital. The woman died five days later from inter-cranial bleeding and hemorrhaging.

The family claims that more could have been done to protect the woman from being attacked at the facility. The family also accuses the facility and its workers of failing to make sure the woman received the medical help she needed immediately after the attack.

Minorities fish in polluted local waters despite warnings, leading to ...

FROM THE GRIO ? Fried fish, crab cakes, and seafood gumbo are some of the many traditional seafood dishes found in the culinary arsenals of African-American cookbooks. However, those using locally-caught fish to cook up these dishes might be unknowingly poisoning themselves and their families in the process.

A recent article published by Environmental Health News showed that despite minorities being most at risk for consuming contaminated fish caught in the nation?s rivers, lakes and bays, more than 4,500 state advisories warning against such consumption has failed to adequately reach them.

?It?s certainly a national issue,? said Rae Tyson, author of the article, which is part of EHN?s larger environmental justice issues series. Tyson spent three months traveling to the Great Lakes and upstate New York and speaking with about thirty doctors, state environmental agencies, activists, minority groups and fishermen from across the country.

?The fact is that there is not a high level of awareness,? said Tyson.

In eating the fish from their neighborhood waters, African-Americans, Asian and Latino immigrants, and Native Americans, especially those in low-income communities, unknowingly ingest contaminants like mercury and industrial compounds linked to neurological problems. Women under 50, pregnant women, and children run the most risk of suffering directly from eating the tainted food.

Minority communities have been found to consume fish, aquatic life and wildlife in greater quantities than the general population, as reported in a landmark study published by the EPA in 2001. A 2011 Cornell University survey illustrated another disparity, finding that of the 1,700 licensed Great Lakes fishermen questioned, 61 percent of whites said they followed the advisories, compared to only 50 percent of non-whites.

Why do so many minorities persist in the dangerous practice? ?For some, fishing is a necessity and not a sport. If you need to put food on the table, or if your heritage is tied up with fishing, education can only go so far,? Andria Ventura of California?s Clean Water Action was quoted as saying in Tyson?s report.

Yet, authorities must also take more responsibility for failing to communicate the risks of eating items fished from toxic environments. Between tourism offices promoting sport fishing and state agencies advising certain species for consumption over others, the advisories ?send a mixed message to anyone out there fishing,? said Tyson.

Language barriers, varying computer access, and agencies? underestimation of their consumption levels and eating practices also thwart increased awareness in these multicultural groups.

Some fishermen featured in the Environmental Health News article who were aware of the fish advisories insisted that they would continue to catch their family?s food from the polluted waters anyway. A migrant farm worker who ?needs to feed [his] family? by fishing from a polluted creek told Tyson, ?The water is clean so the fish is okay,? despite the warnings.

A lack of immediate health affects from contaminants may be one reason that fishermen who are aware of the pollution advisories have yet to heed the state warnings.

?You?re not going to drop dead from eating it,? said Dr. Isaac Wirgin, an Associate Professor at the New York University of Environmental Medicine. ?The effects don?t come for years or decades later.?

However, when the results of eating contaminated wildlife do surface, the effect on the victims can be devastating. This past March, the Environmental Protection Agency authored a study that found developmental deficits and neurological problems in children whose mothers ate PCB-contaminated fish.

The attention given to inadequate advisories that attempt to deter minorities and other groups from eating tainted fish is just ?a band-aid? and the ?tip of the iceberg,? according to Monique Harden, founder and co-director of Advocates for Environmental Human Rights, a public interest law firm.

More charges in Tulsa church abuse investigation

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? A fourth victim of alleged abuse at a 17,000-member Tulsa megachurch has come forward, and police said Tuesday that there might be a fifth.

At the same time, members of Victory Christian Center are beginning to speak publicly about the allegations that have shaken the worldwide ministry's foundations and tarnished the reputations of its pastor and her family members.

Prosecutors added two additional charges Monday against 20-year-old Chris Denman, a former church employee. He was arrested Sept. 5 on a complaint alleging that he raped a 13-year-old girl in a stairwell on the ministry's campus in August and molested a 15-year-old girl. He faces new charges of making a lewd proposal to a child and using a computer to commit a sex crime involving a 12-year-old girl.

Another ex-church employee, 23-year-old Israel Castillo, was arrested last week and is charged with making a lewd proposal to a 15-year-old girl and using a computer to commit a sex crime.

Tulsa Police Det. Cpl. Greg Smith told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday that a third suspect could face charges related to alleged sexual abuse of a fifth victim. Two things are complicating that case, Smith said, because the victim's parents are uncooperative and the suspect is no longer in Tulsa.

"We're at a stalemate," Smith said. "The third suspect we haven't talked about because all we have to go on now is secondhand information."

On Wednesday, five employees of the south Tulsa church ? including the son and daughter-in-law of head pastor Sharon Daugherty ? are scheduled to be arraigned in district court for allegedly waiting two weeks before reporting the rape of the 13-year-old by Denman to authorities. John Daugherty, Charica Daugherty, Paul Willemstein, Anna George and Harold "Frank" Sullivan each face one misdemeanor count of failing to report child abuse.

Jason Robertson, an attorney representing John and Charica Daugherty, who are both youth pastors at the church, said his clients did nothing wrong.

"We are confident when an impartial jury hears all the evidence, deliberates, and reaches a conclusion, the last words spoken in this case will be 'not guilty,' " he said in a statement. It was unclear from court records Tuesday if the other three had hired attorneys.

A spokesman for the church said Tuesday the five employees remain suspended pending a disciplinary review. The spokesman said the church had no comment on the new charges.

On Friday, the mother of the 13-year-old filed a lawsuit against the church, alleging that officials attempted to cover up the incident to do "damage control." The suit filed in Tulsa County District Court is seeking more than $75,000, according to the complaint.

Some members of the large, tight-knit church are beginning to open up about the alleged crimes, especially since Sharon Daugherty told congregants during a weekend sermon to speak out about child abuse.

Tim Peterson, a 28-year Victory member, said other churches across the country should learn from what's happened here.

"It's a bad situation for the church to be on the front page of the paper every day, but there isn't a church within a 500-mile radius that doesn't know about this now.

"Every youth pastor knows now 'If I suspect abuse, I need to report it,' because if you don't report this, you could end up being charged," Peterson said.

Pam Tiernan, a member of the church for more than 30 years, praised Victory Christian Center for being as transparent as possible regarding the allegations against the former employees.

"That's how you heal," she said. "You don't sweep anything under the rug."

The ministry ? founded in 1981 by Sharon and the late Billy Joe Daugherty and shaped in a similar mold to Tulsa televangelist Oral Roberts' charismatic Christian ministries ? issued statements last week accepting responsibility for the lapse in reporting.

In a statement to The Associated Press, the church said its employees failed to follow a written policy requiring any allegation of abuse to be reported by employees to the state's Department of Human Services, and internally within one hour to their department head and the director of human resources.

Ice-T, Coco Among Judges of Unleash the Love : DogTipper: Saving ...

Seamlessly weaving fashion with compassion, couture-clad canines ruled the catwalk on September 23rd at a Spot-centric fashion show for a paws cause.

A day of play which attracted more than 1,300 dog devotees and over 600 pets, this year the 12th annual Mutts Mania event in East Hanover, New Jersey included Unleash the Love, a runway competition for fashion forward Fidos who, with help from New York City models, showed off their doggie duds for a celebrity panel of judges which included Ice-T (Ice Loves Coco, Law and Order: SVU), Coco and their four-pawed pals Spartacus and Maximus; Elisa Jimenez, a Project Runway season four participant and Project Runway: All Stars contestant; and Doggie Moms star Karen Biehl, who attended with her high-profile pup, Eli the Chihuahua.

The Best in Show dog received a basket which included such items such as custom pet stationary from Sent-Well, pet baked goods from Bubba Rose, toys from BarkBox, a leather bowtie collar from Luxe Mutt, a grooming gift certificate to Wash n? Wiggle, collar accessories from EKammeyer, a pedicure set of Puppy Paint, and a photo session with Zap Photography.

A happening with heart, Mutts Mania raised funds for Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, a no-kill non-profit animal welfare organization which is currently celebrating 40 years of providing comfort and care to homeless dogs and cats.
