Paterno family adjusts to new era at Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State's season opener on Saturday will be the first since 1949 not featuring someone with the last name Paterno on the coaching staff. They're out of the picture, like the campus statue of the family patriarch; erased like his coaching records.
But the family will be in Beaver Stadium in spirit, if not watching from a skybox ? a sign that through the turmoil of the past few months, life goes on for the clan that was synonymous with Penn State for decades and remains firmly rooted in a supportive community.
Scandal tarnished the legacy of the late Joe Paterno, the Hall of Famer who coached the Nittany Lions until his firing in November days after former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested on child sex abuse charges. Son and former longtime assistant coach Jay Paterno no longer tutors the quarterbacks.
Jay Paterno, one of Joe and Sue Paterno's five children, has been traveling and writing columns at a time when he's usually used to getting ready for the season opener.
"It's such a change in your lifestyle. Credit to Jay. Jay has kept himself busy. He's smart enough, savvy enough," said Tim Sweeney, a businessman and former player who is head of the Football Letterman's Club. Sweeney, who said he can relate as a former high school coach himself, briefly saw Jay Paterno at a charity golf outing in early August.
"Still, their hearts will be at Beaver Stadium on Saturday," said Sweeney, referring to Jay Paterno and the other veteran assistants who left after the arrival of Bill O'Brien, Paterno's replacement as head coach.
The family, as part of Paterno's employment agreement, received use of a Beaver Stadium suite for 25 years. Family members intend to attend the season opener against Ohio University on Saturday, but only to show their support for the new regime, family spokesman Dan McGinn said.
"The family doesn't want to do anything to distract from the game this weekend," he said.
Affixed to the front screen door of the Paternos' modest ranch home is a copy of a blue and white sign also on display in the windows of most downtown businesses, some homes and even cars. The message on the sign reads: "Proud to Support Penn State Football."
Members of the Paterno family either did not return calls or would not comment for this article. But the community of State College, often known as Happy Valley, appears to remain protective of the closest thing it has to a royal family.
Neighbors said that while Sue Paterno might venture out a little less than before the scandal hit, grandchildren, other relatives and friends still stop by the house regularly. Well-wishers, strangers among them, drop off Penn State paraphernalia or other messages of support in the front yard or doorstep.
Most in the broader community who talked to The Associated Press said what happened was tragic and they're sympathetic to the sex-abuse victims, but they perceived a rush to judgment about Joe Paterno's role in the scandal.
Sue Paterno continues to volunteer with Special Olympics, a charity she has long championed. A new Catholic student center across the street from campus bearing her name appears near completion.
"We are so grateful to her and the entire Paterno family for their dedication, prayers, and support," the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown said in a statement. "Because of Mrs. Paterno and so many others, Catholic students at Penn State will soon have a place to call their very own."
Sue Paterno stayed mostly out of sight at a summer pep rally for the team, save for a brief appearance at a side door of Penn State's football building. Unseen by most of the dozens of fans at the early morning rally, she was there and gone ? quickly.
Lawyer and former Penn State defensive back Adam Taliaferro, now a university trustee, grew close to the Paternos after suffering a serious spinal cord injury in a game against Ohio State in 2000. He said he spoke to Sue inside the football building while fans rallied outside and told the AP she was "one of the strongest women I know."
"All of us together will help her get through it," Taliaferro said. "She will always remain a huge part of the university."
Paterno started with Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950, becoming head coach in 1966.
Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's university-commissioned report in July said Paterno and three other school officials concealed allegations against Sandusky. Ten days later, the school took down the bronzed statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium.
Then, the NCAA announced it had accepted the findings and levied unprecedented penalties on the program including a four-year bowl ban, significant scholarship cuts and a $60 million fine. The NCAA vacated every Penn State win from 1998-2011, and Paterno was stripped of 111 career victories ? meaning he no longer holds the record for most coaching wins in major college football.
Paterno, who was diagnosed with lung cancer days after his firing, was not interviewed by Freeh's team, and the family said the NCAA had not contacted the family or the family's attorney. He died in January.
The family has said university leadership and the NCAA accepted Freeh's conclusions in a rush to judgment, without due process and a questioning of the findings. They vowed after Freeh released his findings that they would conduct their own investigation, which is ongoing, McGinn said.
"They're not looking for sympathy," McGinn said when asked how the Paternos have reacted to criticism. "The family is very stoic about this. The intent is just that the complete truth comes out."

U.S. loans emergency oil to refiner after Isaac
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States will loan 1 million barrels of crude from emergency reserves to Marathon Petroleum Corp after one of its refineries slowed output in the wake of Hurricane Isaac, the Department of Energy said on Friday.
The Obama administration has been considering plans to tap a larger amount of crude from the 727 million barrel Strategic Petroleum Reserve as tension over Iran's nuclear program and Western sanctions on Tehran have boosted oil prices.
The White House is in the data-gathering process and would not likely make a decision on a larger tapping of the reserves until early September, sources have said.
Friday's decision by the DOE was much narrower than a large drawdown, which typically involves talks with oil consumer and producer countries. Energy Secretary Steven Chu has the power to loan small amounts of oil from the reserve following storms and other events that reduce petroleum supplies.
"This emergency loan from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will help ensure Marathon's refining operations have the crude oil they need to continue operating," Chu said in a statement.
The DOE said it continues to "keep all options on the table to address additional or sustained oil supply issues."
An analyst said the loan of sweet crude oil to Marathon should not have a big impact on markets.
"This is a small, limited time swap in response to Isaac and should not have a major impact on crude prices, although, as DOE noted, it is keeping the option of a larger release on the table for future or sustained disruptions," said Bob McNally, head of the Washington-based consulting firm the Rapidan Group.
Oil futures in New York rose about $1.50 after the loan announcement, to more than $96 per barrel.
The DOE has not received additional requests from other refiners along the U.S. Gulf Coast for oil loans, a source familiar with the talks said. If the agency gets more requests, it "will move expeditiously to review them" to ensure it is responding as quickly as possible to those hit by the storm, the source said.
Marathon said its 490,000 barrels per day refinery in Garyville, Louisiana, was running at reduced rates due to heavy rain but that it had not sustained significant damage.
Under the loan agreement, Marathon will return an equal amount of similar oil to the reserve within three months, plus additional barrels representing interest, the DOE said. The SPR will be ready to begin delivering oil to Marathon on Friday.
Exxon Mobil, Valero and Royal Dutch Shell also have refineries that were either still shut or were at reduced rates due to the storm.
Valero spokesman Bill Day said his company had not asked for oil from the reserve but it would continue to evaluate its needs. Both of its Louisiana refineries remained shut.
Isaac made landfall this week as a Category 1 hurricane but has since moved inland and weakened to a tropical depression.
BIG DRAWDOWN LAST YEAR
The Obama administration agreed to tap 30 million barrels of oil last year - less than two days of U.S. demand - as civil war in Libya took out about 1 million bpd of crude from the country. The drawdown was part of a wider sale of 60 million barrels coordinated with the International Energy Agency.
This year sanctions have reduced Iran's oil output the same rate as last year's Libyan crisis, spurring calls from Congress to push the White House to release oil. Countries in the West believe Iran is attempting to develop nuclear arms, while Tehran says its nuclear program is for energy and medical purposes.
Maria van der Hoeven, the IEA's chief, said in Norway this week she opposed a coordinated drawdown, citing adequate global supplies. Sanctions on Iran, "didn't come out of the blue," she added.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of Men's Wearhouse gained more than 3 percent, riding on the coattails of JoS. A. Bank Clothiers, which posted surprisingly strong earnings for the second quarter Wednesday.
THE SPARK: JoS. A. Bank's revenue jumped 14 percent and net income topped Wall Street predictions, sending investors grabbing for shares of Men's Wearhouse before it reports earnings next week on the hope that it would do the same.
THE ANALYSIS: Margaret Whitfield of Sterne, Agee & Leach said in a client note that she expects Men's Wearhouse to report second-quarter earnings of $1.13 per share on Sept. 5, a penny better than the consensus estimate. Whitfield anticipates revenue at Men's Wearhouse stores open at least a year will be up 4 percent. The metric is a key indicator of a retailer's performance as it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed. Its stock rose more than 17 percent in afternoon trading.
SHARE ACTION: Men's Wearhouse Inc.'s stock added $1.07, or 3.5 percent, to $31.81. Over the past year, the shares have traded in a range of $24.50 to $40.97. For the year to date, the stock is down 7 percent.

Oh, Annie what have you gotten yourself into? "Loving the Alien" showed how far Annie has strayed both professionally and personally.
Ever since the end of the season premiere, "Hang On to Yourself," I have been worried about Annie; her decision to join Simon in the shower made me extremely sad. No longer was Annie the innocent CIA agent that we first met.
On the heels of her transfer request from the DPD, Annie decided to go rogue to continue her relationship with Simon. Of course, Lena couldn't officially approve her "vacation" to Cuba, but helped Annie and then lied to Joan about any knowledge of Annie's whereabouts.
In the past, Annie always let Auggie in on what she was doing, even if not necessarily approved. At this point, she has even cut him off from this part of her professional and personal life. Their scene by the elevator was painful to watch; he knew she was lying and she knew that he didn't buy her story. When he finds out what she's been up to, I'm not sure he will easily accept it.
Professionally, Annie is risking everything. It's a bit surprising that after being abruptly dismissed by Lena, Annie has gone back to her. It shows how emotionally invested Annie has become in the Simon mission and in Simon himself. She knew Joan wouldn't support her, so she went around her boss to get it from Lena.
This will either be a career maker or a career-ender for Annie. Ultimately, I expect that Annie will be betrayed by Lena, and Joan will be the one who backs her up when she needs it. She may be able to remain at the CIA, but at what cost?
Personally, Annie made a decision to walk into that shower and hasn't been able to get out since. She was genuinely thrilled to hear that Simon had never been as happy with any other woman. And there was no faking their passionate lovemaking. Simon may be in love with Annie, but she is just as smitten with him.
Simon killed his handler to protect Annie and there isn't a higher sacrifice than that. He put his life on the line for her. When Annie has to make the choice between Simon and the CIA, which one will she choose? Right now, it's a toss-up, but I'm guessing she will try to find a way to help the CIA while protecting him. That's Annie's way.
Back in America, Auggie was persistent in finding out who killed Jai. Even though Arthur didn't believe Henry knew anything or at least anything he would reveal, Auggie wouldn't give up. Auggie, as usual, was correct and he will hopefully find a cornucopia of information from Jai's safe house. The question is: how soon will the case into Jai's assassination and his private investigation lead to Simon?
Lastly, Arthur's quest to become the next Ambassador to China seems to have come to an end. His reaction to the Senator's comments was not expected at all. Arthur has held his head high through many inquests, but his desire for the position was less important than his pride.
This season, Covert Affairs has upped the intensity and situations are reaching explosive levels. Annie has put her relationships with Joan, Auggie and the CIA at risk. Something will have to give and it won't be pretty when it happens. Eventually, Joan and Lena are going to have the ultimate showdown. And then there is the mystery surrounding Jai's assassination. When they find the culprit more lives will be at risk.
Throughout the entire hour, I was on the edge of my seat with worry about what was going to happen to Annie. Would Simon try to kill her? The suspense was nearly heart attack inducing. As long as Annie continues her relationship with Simon, the danger isn't going anywhere.?

Mexican judge orders arrest of ex-governor on drug charges
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican federal judge has ordered the arrest of former state Governor Tomas Yarrington on suspicion of aiding drug traffickers, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Yarrington, a former Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) governor of Tamaulipas, has been a thorn in the side of the PRI since allegations surfaced this year he had worked with drug cartels.
The centrist PRI, which ruled Mexico between 1929 and 2000, is due to return to power in December after the party's candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, won a July 1 presidential election.
The PRI's long rule was tainted by allegations of corruption and making deals with drug gangs, which have ravaged Mexico over the past six years despite the efforts of conservative President Felipe Calderon to bring them to heel.
Yarrington, who governed the northern border state of Tamaulipas between 1999 and 2005, is suspected of accepting cash from drug cartels and using it to buy real estate in Texas.
Mexican Attorney General Marisela Morales said the order had been issued for his capture but noted the whereabouts of the 55-year-old Yarrington were currently unknown.
Yarrington, who was suspended from the PRI in May, is already facing related suits in the United States.
In May, two civil lawsuits were brought against Yarrington in a U.S. federal court, accusing him of "using his illicit income from his political years to become a major real estate investor" in the United States.
Tamaulipas, across the Rio Grande from Texas, is one of the country's most violent drug trafficking corridors, and home the Gulf Cartel and its former enforcers, the brutal Zetas gang.
Yarrington in June denied the accusations, saying they were being used to discredit the PRI in the run-up to the election. However, PRI officials chided Yarrington, saying he should face the accusations in the United States.

Can the world's existing farmlands provide enough crops to satisfy the hunger of the nine billion people?up from seven billion currently?that demographers predict will be living on the planet by the mid-21st century? Or will more and more forests and other ecosystems have to be cleared to feed all the extra mouths? A new study, published in Nature on August 30, suggests that increasing deforestation could be avoided provided farmers made better use of water and nutrients on land currently under cultivation around the globe. The central premise of the new analysis is that intensifying agriculture where it already exists is the key to preserving a balance between farming and forests. To do that, the researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Minnesota (U.M.) analyzed the so-called yield gap. That's the difference between what the highest yielding farm or area within a given region can produce?for example, corn?compared with what the average yield is. The difference between this best-practice farm and the average farm is the yield gap.
The researchers then employed national and regional agricultural data from outfits such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Fertilizer Industry Association to determine the root causes of these yield gaps. Simply by improving fertilizer application and irrigation, the researchers find that global yields of corn, wheat and rice?the three main staple crops?could be increased by 64 percent, 71 percent and 47 percent, respectively.
"We are not claiming to diagnose the exact management practices needed on any particular plot of land," explains research fellow Nathan Mueller, who led the study from the U.M.'s Institute on the Environment, because local factors such as soils and weather can play an important role. Instead, the goal is to identify what practices might help close yield gaps at the regional or even global level and highlight those areas most in need of intervention.
That list includes the U.S. Great Plains and China, where more fertilizer is used than is strictly necessary. For example, American farmers apply so much fertilizer on Midwestern corn fields that much of it ends up running off, ending up in the Mississippi River and, ultimately, reaching the Gulf of Mexico. There the copious fertilizer fuels a bloom of algae and other microscopic plants that then die. Microbes that consume the dead plants also use all the oxygen available in surrounding waters, creating a vast "dead zone" that is devoid of sea life?an unfortunate side effect of the demand for more maize.
Lessening fertilizer use in the U.S. and China would free up nutrients to be applied to fields in eastern Europe and western Africa with no detriment to American or Chinese people. As it stands, the researchers estimate that some 11 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer and five million metric tons of phosphate could be saved annually at present without diminishing current yields. Those savings then could be applied to underachieving areas.

Sudan rebels call for aid through S. Sudan, Ethiopia
Rebels in Sudan's war-torn South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by fighting, called Wednesday for aid to be sent in through South Sudan and Ethiopia.
The request -- which the rebels said they will formally make next week -- comes as an international aid plan falls behind schedule despite warnings about the humanitarian situation in the two states along Sudan's southern border.
"We will ask for the cross-border operation from South Sudan and Ethiopia," Arnu Ngutulu Lodi, spokesman for the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), told AFP.
He said the Sudanese government "is not respecting" a memorandum of understanding signed on August 5.
A ruling party official in Khartoum, however, insisted the government is committed to providing humanitarian assistance to all those affected by the war.
Both the government and rebels signed similar memorandums with the African Union, Arab League and UN to allow for humanitarian access throughout South Kordofan and Blue Nile -- including in rebel-held areas.
The signing came six months after the three organisations submitted their proposal to Khartoum.
The UN has expressed concern for months about a worsening humanitarian situation in the war zone, where Khartoum cited security concerns in tightly restricting the operations of foreign aid agencies.
Lodi accused the government of "delaying tactics" and said the rebels would officially request the cross-border operation at a meeting between the signatories next Tuesday.
He said the rebels are still "committed to the MOU" and to working with the three foreign organisations.
Ali Adam, a director general of Sudan's Humanitarian Aid Commission, confirmed on Monday that implementation of the memorandum was behind schedule. He said the required planning meetings had not yet occurred.
"Our duty and our responsibility is to provide aid to our people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile," Rabbie Abdelatti Ebaid, a senior official of the ruling National Congress Party, told AFP. "Each and every and all support will be provided by our government."
Under the memorandum reached between Khartoum, the UN, AU and Arab League, the "entire humanitarian operations" are to be under Sudanese government supervision.
A United Nations source said the UN "has to respect the sovereignty of nation states" and could not enter a country without its permission.
But the source, declining to be named, said the UN "does understand why some humanitarian organisations, seeing what is happening... may wish to pursue" a cross-border operation.
"We will continue to work with the government to facilitate humanitarian assistance into SPLM-North areas under the memorandum of understanding that was signed with the tripartite," the UN source told AFP.
Ethnic minority insurgents of the SPLM-N were allies of southern rebels during Sudan's 22-year civil war, which ended in a 2005 peace deal and South Sudan's independence in July last year.
Sudan accuses South Sudan of supporting the SPLM-N, a charge which analysts believe despite denials by the government in Juba.
"We are not acknowledging the so-called northern sector of SPLM," Ebaid said.
The UN says more than 650,000 people have been displaced or severely affected by the fighting in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, where related conflicts began in June and September last year.
Government figures showed that more than 8,700 were uprooted in the latest fighting which continued this week around Al Moreib village in northeastern South Kordofan.
The rebels said on Friday that the government "campaign" against civilian areas aimed to stymie the international aid plan.
In total, more than 160,000 refugees have fled to South Sudan from South Kordofan and Blue Nile, the UN says.
In mid-August, the UN's World Food Programme began rare air drops of food to the refugees in South Sudan, calling the move "a sign of the increasing urgency" with much of the area inaccessible because of flooding.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said late Tuesday it was halting most aid programs in Pakistan due to fears over deteriorating security ? a concern underscored early Wednesday when 19 soldiers and militants were killed in a clash at a military checkpoint.
The independent global aid agency, which rarely suspends its operations even in war zones, has worked in the country since the end of British colonial rule in 1947 - but was shaken by the discovery in April of the?beheaded body of British doctor Khalil Rasjed Dale, one of its health workers.
It said it would carry on working in the country "but on a reduced scale," having already suspended operations in three of Pakistan's four provinces in May pending a security assessment.
As attacks increase, aid workers say they must keep safety in mind at all times.?? NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

Luck, Griffin impress; Redskins top Colts 30-17

"I've never had my own introduction ever, high school or college, so that was extremely fun with the smoke and everything," Griffin said. "It was like you're in a movie."
In many ways, Saturday's game was promoted like a movie opening, the curtain raiser for a budding quarterback rivalry between the Nos. 1 and 2 picks in the draft. The co-stars responded with a display of A-list poise and promise as Griffin's Redskins defeated Luck's Indianapolis Colts 30-17.

Through three preseason games, Luck is 40 for 64 for 514 yards with three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 90.2 rating. Griffin is 20 for 31 for 193 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 103.2 rating ? not to mention an approving coach.
"He keeps on getting better and better," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said, "more comfortable with the system, with what we're trying to do."
Meanwhile, someone forgot to tell Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris that the game wasn't all about him. The sixth-round draft pick, getting the start because of a rash of injuries, ran for 107 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Evan Royster (knee) and Roy Helu Jr. (Achilles) both sat out, while Tim Hightower was limited to five carries in his first game since tearing the ACL in his left knee last season.

Romney turns to Ohio amid series of distractions

POWELL, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney declared Saturday that "women need our help" as he promised to promote women-led businesses should he defeat President Barack Obama in November's election.
The appeal came as the former Massachusetts governor tried to shrug off a series of unwanted distractions before the Republican convention opens Monday in Florida.
"Just a word to the women entrepreneurs out there, if we become president and vice president, we want to speak to you, we want to help you," Romney said with running mate Paul Ryan at his side during an outdoor rally that drew an estimated 5,000 people to the Columbus area. "Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help."
While the comments were focused on women entrepreneurs, the promise comes as Romney tries to close Obama's perceived advantage among female voters. Women's issues have played a prominent role in the presidential contest. Republicans faced difficult questions this week about the party's position on abortion after a Missouri Senate candidate suggested that women's bodies can prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."
Both parties hope to use their conventions to appeal to female voters. The Republican convention, in particular, will feature high-profile women such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. Planners also shifted the speaking slot for Romney's wife, Ann, to ensure network television coverage of her speech.
Romney's comments about wanting to help businesswoman came less than 24 hours after he raised the discredited rumor that Obama wasn't born in the United States. The remark, and Romney's efforts to explain it, overshadowed his economic message as he campaigned near his Michigan birthplace on Friday.
Romney did not repeat the remark on Saturday, but instead assailed the Democratic incumbent for failing to deliver on his campaign promises.
"I can almost read his speech now. It'll be filled with promises and tell people how wonderful things are," Romney said of the speech Obama will give at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina next month. "It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record. And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."
At the same time, Obama used his weekend radio and Internet address and a new TV ad to highlight Romney's plans for the Medicare health program for seniors.
Obama doesn't mention his Republican challenger in the radio address but says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.
His new 30-second TV ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.
"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," says the new ad, which was airing in Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.
Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad "another false attack from a desperate president." Williams said Romney is the one who would reverse billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare by Obama and protect the program for current beneficiaries and future retirees.
Romney's Ohio rally was expected to be his final public appearance before the Republican National Convention opens Monday in Tampa, Fla., where the former Massachusetts governor will formally accept the presidential nomination.
While GOP officials suggest the momentum is on their side heading into the crucial period, Romney and his party have faced tough questions in recent weeks on Medicare and abortion.
Now his joking reference to the president's birth certificate links him to the so-called birther movement and a wing of his party ? a combined 25 percent in an April Pew Research Center poll ? that says it either isn't sure or doesn't believe Obama was born in the U.S.
Romney caused another stir earlier in the week by declaring that big business was "doing fine" in the current economy in part because companies get advantages from offshore tax havens.
Still, polls suggest the presidential contest is essentially a tossup as Obama struggles under the weight of a weak economy.
The president's re-election campaign has pushed voter attention away from the economy in recent weeks, particularly after Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate. Ryan is the author of a controversial budget plan that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.
Outside the Ohio rally, protesters heckled the presumptive GOP ticket about its plans for seniors' health care.
Speaking before Romney, Ryan said one in six Americans lives in poverty. He said the country is done being fooled by Obama's promises to change Washington.
Democrats also have seized on Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin's comment about "legitimate rape."
The congressman announced Friday that he would not leave the Senate contest despite overwhelming pressure from Romney and top Republican officials.
Romney made the birth certificate remark at a large outdoor rally in Michigan, where he grew up and where his father, George, served as governor. He told supporters that he and his wife, Ann, had been born at nearby hospitals.
"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised," Romney said.
The crowd of more than 7,000 responded with hearty laughter.
Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt swiftly denounced the remark, saying Romney "embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them."
Romney later denied that the remark was directed at the president.
"No, no, not a swipe," Romney told CBS News. "I've said throughout the campaign and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the U.S. This was fun about us and coming home. And humor, you know ? we've got to have a little humor in a campaign."
The authenticity of Obama's birth certificate has been questioned by Republican critics who insist he is not a "natural-born citizen" as required by the Constitution. Obama released a long-form version of his birth certificate last year as proof that he was born in Hawaii in 1961.
But conservative questions have lingered. And Romney has declined to condemn such questions, particularly from prominent donor Donald Trump.
The Obama campaign released a web video Friday night featuring Romney's remark and declaring that "America doesn't need a birther-in-chief." Democrats intend to keep the pressure on as the Republican convention gets under way.
Obama was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, as Republicans began arriving in Tampa for their convention. But Democrats were planning to counter Romney's message throughout the week.
Reaching out to young voters, a key component of his 2008 election, Obama scheduled stops Tuesday and Wednesday in the college towns of Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.
Vice President Joe Biden canceled plans to appear in Tampa on Monday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, but was scheduled to be in Orlando and St. Augustine, Fla., on Tuesday.
After Ryan gives his convention address on Wednesday night, first lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman."
The high-profile events are paired with a number of smaller gatherings around the country by Democrats aiming to attract female voters and a bus tour with party activists in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Obama campaign deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said the president's team was "not going to cede four days of this campaign just because of a party convention."
