Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- It's a blow to the city of Duluth for multiple reasons. The mail processing center in Lincoln Park could be closing as soon as June of this year.
According to the President of the Union of Postal Workers, some of the employees could get work somewhere else.
"The sad thing is we don't know exactly what is going to happen or if it's going to happen at all," said Todd Fawcett, President of the local chapter of American Postal Workers.
City leaders say the city could be at an economic disadvantage if the plant closes.
"These are not only important to the postal service but for our entire economy and those businesses in the area that rely on that quick postal service," said Mayor Don Ness.
And until more information becomes available, the fate of the Lincoln Park mail facility is unknown.
U.S. Senator Al Franken responded saying while it is a sad day for the employers and their families, he is not giving up the fight to keep the processing center open.
He's hoping the Senate will take up a Postal Reform Bill as soon as possible.
